How Freelancer.com Robbed me? Please You Stay Away....

Is freelancer.com a scam??? Well I would not say it is totally a scam, but I guarantee that they will never let go any opportunity to snatch away your money. Their rules, policies, support team, in fact their whole system is to suck the blood out of freelancers. There are many freelancers out there who had been stabbed by freelancer.com and I am also one of them now.  Let me share some links below that would be enough to raise your eyebrows:

My Advice for You

If you are working there, you better withdraw all your earnings right now. Because they can rob you any minute. You don't believe me? Take a look at below comments and please please please learn from our experience before you also become a victim.

There is a plethora of negative views about freelancer.com out there, I shared only some of those that had Human picture beside them. So you know there are not posted by some bots. You can read more of them here on Freelancer.com Review.

My Bad Experience with Freelancer.com

Note: If you don't want to read through the whole thing, you can simply skip it and go to the bottom of this post. I have written the shortened version there for you.

A guy hired me on freelancer.com. I finished his work and got 5 stars rating. Then he asked me to do some more work for him and assigned me 2 more projects. I again delivered the work nicely. He again gave me 5 stars rating on both projects and left. The money I earned from him was now showing in my account balance and everything was OKAY. But not for long....

I went offline and came back after 3-4 hours. I then saw that my account balance was in negative as you can see in the below screenshot. I contacted the support team right away. 

Here is the reply that I got from freelancer support team:

Your employer "ABC" has violated our Terms and Conditions and with that, our Site Administrators closed their account and the funds reversed

So without telling me anything, they returned employer all of his money that he had paid me. I was so upset and angry about their act. I messaged them to return my money because I had EARNED it !!!. It was no longer his money!!!. What I have to do with it if someone violated their terms & conditions? and is that what you do when someone violates any rule? You return them their money??? isn't it ridiculous???

Well instead of returning me my money, that's what they said to me:

We recommend that you contact your employer using any means regarding the payments. Considering that your employer's Freelancer account was closed, you may request your employer to have the payments made outside the website

Are you serious??? You really think that person is some SAINT who would return my money outside your website??? I met him on your site and did all the dealings here so I know everything is secure, and that guy won't run away with my money after getting the work done. But you guys did the opposite. You returned him the money that no longer belonged to him and now you telling me to request him???

Well I had no choice but to get them to message him about returning my money outside the site. They asked me to wait for 48 hours. After waiting 2 days, I messaged them again asking if there is any update.

That's what they replied:

Your employer has yet to respond to the email we sent them. As such, we have sent them a follow-up.

Like he would really respond. Till this day, I have not received my earned money. The settlement never occurred. Freelancer.com still owes me $510.

Another thing, if you just returned him the money, then why my account balance is showing NEGATIVE? Why it is not showing the same amount like it was before when I was not yet hired by that person?

Well Here is Another BombShell Now
They send me the following message in response to my above question. I am posting the exact screenshot.

They had deducted 15% of the project money from my account right after when I had accepted the projects. They did it 3 times as I accepted 3 projects from that guy. But when they returned him the money, they did not keep their 15% from it. Instead, they returned him all of his money and now they were demanding me to pay the project fees of all three.

If everything was reversed, should not had they returned the project fee too? I mean I no longer had the money that I earned from those projects, because the money was returned to the employer. So why they are asking me to pay the project fee?

Here is then what they replied me:

Please note that project fees are non-refundable regardless of the outcome or status of the project.

So in other words, no matter if everything was reversed and the money was returned to employer, we won't reverse the Project Fee. Also, we will deduct it from YOU. We won't deduct it from the actual project money. Because we have returned it all to the employer(God knows if they had really returned him the money or they had ditched him too). Hence your balance will stay negative unless you pay the due money.

An Overview of My Bad Experience

I spent my valuable time to complete the work of a person. He violated some rules on freelancer(maybe he did it on purpose), and in result, as a so-called punishment, they closed his account and returned all of his money that he owed me. Freelancer' Support team then messaged him to settle payments with me outside the website. But he never responded to their messages.

Along with that, freelancer.com demanded me to pay the 15% of projects money as a projects fee. Projects that were all reversed and that earned me NO MONEY.

Today still, my balance is showing Negative. They are asking me to pay the project fees in order to continue working on the site. But don't worry, I am never gonna do it. I will never ever be working on that site again.

They have so many weird rules, flawed billing system and stupid terms & conditions that are there ONLY to snatch away your money. They robbed me of my $510, but that amount will pay off if I manage to save you from them. Please do STAY AWAY from that site. You need not to go through the same bad experience. 1) Be Careful About His/Her Location and Timings

First of all, you should ask clients about their location. So you know how much time difference there is between you and him. Then you must ask when he/she will be free to talk. Not only you will be able to communicate better this way, It will also show your client that you consider his Time important.

2) Be Personal

Take their problem as yours. Don't be someone who is only concerned about getting paid. Instead, take special interest in their problem. Give your personal advice and suggestions. Point out if there is something missing or something that can be improved. Think long term and advise them accordingly. Make them feel that there is someone behind their back and they are not alone.

3) Deliver More Than Required

For example, you are hired to design a logo. Now instead of just following their instructions and delivering one logo. You should deliver 3-5 extra logos with different styles and using your own imagination. Give them more options to decide from and show them that you are concerned about their satisfaction not their money.

4) Show them What you have Done

The look of your final product matters a lot. Be it an article or a logo that you designed for them. It must be easily accessible and easy to scan. For example, you were asked to post comments on various websites. Now when you are about to deliver the work. You should create a nice excel file or PowerPoint presentation. Showing them what you have done, on how many sites you have commented, to which niche those websites belong? how old the websites are ? etc

5) Asking if they Need Anything Else

After completing the work, you must ask them if there is anything remaining that they would like to be done. It shows them that you were not just getting it all over your head. Instead, it seems like you were quite dedicated to the work and still willing to do more.

So those were the main techniques that I use to get tipped from the clients. But do remember that some buyers are not as open hearted as others. If any buyer does not leave you a tip, then just consider him/her as one of those.

1) Expecting Success Overnight

I mean who would have hired a New seller like me when they had other options of hiring Level 1, 2 and Top Rated Sellers.

2) Not using Attractive Images on my Gigs

There are so many gigs on Fiverr. Even hundreds of them get created everyday. So in order to win orders, you must know how to make your gig stand out of the crowd. And one way to do it is to use attractive images and write detailed descriptions.

3) Making Clients wait for Long

Often times I was too busy with the work that I could not take any more orders. So I asked the clients to wait for my message. I made them wait for like 24 hours and you know what? They just hired someone else without waiting for my message. They did the right thing. Because they are concerned only with their work and getting the job done. Why would they wait for my message anyway?

4) Taking Freelancing as a Piece Of Cake

Like many others, I also thought that earning online is like pulling money from the trees. But it is not like that at all. In fact, as a freelancer, you have to work way more as compare to working offline. The only perk of freelancing is that you don't have to leave your house early in the morning.

I have been on Fiverr since 2013, and I have learnt quite a lot about it. Following are the questions that people mostly ask about Fiverr. I have posted their answers below in the light of my experience. Feel free to ask more if you have any other question related to Fiverr.

Question No 1

I have created an account on Fiverr and posted couple of gigs. But I am not getting any order. Nobody has even messaged me yet. Why is that? How long do I have to wait for someone to come and place order on any of my gig?

Answer

You are not alone, I went through the same situation. You have waited for months and I waited for 2 years. Read my emotional Fiverr story HERE. All you need to do is stop being reactive, you have to be PROACTIVE and start bidding on buyers requests. If you are a New Seller, it is very unlikely that someone will automatically come and buy your gig. You will have to get your first order through bidding on buyers requests.

Question No 2

I delivered the work and it got marked as completed automatically. The buyer did not leave me any review/rating. Will that order be counted in my journey of getting on level 1 or level 2?

Answer

Yes, it WILL get counted even if the buyer/client did not leave any review. Actually buyers are not freelancers like us and do not spend much time on Fiverr. They are just concerned with their work. Once their work is done, they don't look back.

Question No 3

I have been bidding on buyers requests. But I am not getting contacted by anyone. Why?

Answer

There can be various reasons behind it. Just know this, other people with level 1 or 2 and a lot of reviews also bid on the same requests. So it is very likely that you haven't been able to beat them. What I do is that I bid low and write unique bid for every request. I fully read the buyer's request and bid accordingly. What kind of Gig should I create? related to Web Design? SEO? Logo Design? What???

Answer

Simple answer, create a gig according to what you are good at. Something that you can do very well. Because there are already a lot of people offering high quality services. You must polish your skills and offer what you can do the BEST. If you don't have any skills, then don't worry. Just find your interest and get perfect in it by practice and by watching YouTube videos. By my experience, I can say that Logo Design, Web Design, Article Writing(Proofreading) and SEO skills are highly in demand.

Question No 5

Fiverr has blocked my account, what should I do? What should I do in order to prevent Fiverr from blocking my account in future?

Answer

If your account is blocked, you should contact their support team and ask for the reason. So that you don't repeat it in future. However, following are the most common reasons that result into of your account getting blocked.

• Sharing contact information.

• Using multiple accounts.

• Doing advertisement and sending spam messages.

• Re-selling your work on Fiverr. For example, someone hired you on Fiverr for the work of $50 and you further hired someone to do that work for you for less than $50. You acting as a middle man and outsourcing your own work on Fiverr is strongly disapproved.

• Sharing adult content either through messages or by creating gigs.

• Asking someone to hire you by posting in buyers requests section.

Question No 6

What Payment methods Fiverr offers? Can people from India and other 3rd World Countries also work on Fiverr?

Answer

The answer is YES. Fiverr pays you through following methods:

• Paypal

• Payoneer ( Fiverr also offers their own Payoneer Card, you can use both )

• Local Bank Transfer( it is applicable for US citizens only yet )

Can someone earn a full time living from Fiverr?

Answer

Yes (check this post), there are many people who use Fiverr as their main income source. Even many people have quit their jobs and started working full time there. But I won't recommend it. You must not fully rely on Fiverr. Build multiple sources of income instead.

What NOT to do When bidding on Buyers Requests? [Fiverr]

If you don't know me, you can read my Fiverr story here. Alright so lets come to the main topic. Following are the things that you should MUST avoid when bidding on buyers requests.

1) Bidding all at Once

As you know we can bid on 10 requests in a day. So don't just login and use all of your bids in a single go. Instead, bid on requests in different periods. Such as bidding in the morning, evening and at night etc.

2) Copy Pasted Bids

Never copy paste the same bid's descriptions. Instead, write a unique and relevant bid description for every buyer request. This will make you stand out of the crowd; the buyer will know that you are serious about the work.

3) Bidding Very High

There are always other people who bid on the same request. They are your competitors. In order to beat the competition, you must not bid very high. Bid low instead, you can re-negotiate the price after talking to the client later. But always bid low in the first place.

4) Not Reading the Buyers Request

I have been a buyer too and have hired many people on Fiverr. One thing I have noticed is that majority of the sellers don't even read the buyer request. They just waste their and buyer's time. So if you just fully read the buyer request and bid accordingly, you will already have an edge over your competitors.

So I was excited like other people when I first joined Fiverr. After reading success stories and good reviews about the site, I thought I will be getting work from the day I will sign up. But it was not like that at all.

I created couple of gigs about proofreading, article writing and web design. Waited couple of days, but heard nothing from anyone. I created more gigs but still nothing. So I just kept waiting and the days, weeks and months passed by. With the course of time, 2 years passed away. By then, I had stopped caring about freelancing. I had concluded that Fiverr is not for me.

Finally, A Breakthrough

One day I heard from someone that there is a bidding system in Fiverr just like other platforms. They call it a Buyers Requests section. I did not know about this before.

I just logged in to my account and started bidding on the buyers requests. I asked for low price in every bid. Eventually I got a message from one person. He wanted me to make his website responsive.

I was so excited that I was willing to work for free even. He sent me all the required files and I started working. Within 24 hours, I submitted him the work. He was very happy and placed the order right away. It was about $30 work that I done for him. But who cares about the money? It was my first project and my first review. Which was of course 5 stars rating review. I was so happy on that day :)

From that day onward, there was no seeing back and nor it will ever be. I never got any review of less than 5 stars yet. I just thank Allah for all the blessings and I try to pay him back by helping other new freelancers.

Why I was not Getting any Order?

In first 2 years, my attitude was passive. I just made couple of gigs and kept hoping that someone will come and buy them. I was just relying on the luck too much. But as soon as I became active and started approaching buyers myself, things got better for me. I always bidded low on requests to stand out of the crowd.  That's how you should proceed too and I am sure you will get your first order very soon.

Alright, let's get back to our main topic. So It was kind of a slow month. There was no work in the first half and then all of sudden I started getting work. Not just that, I crossed my 100th reviews milestone. All those buyers were really great. They hired me repeatedly and also left tips. I earned $104 on Fiverr and out of which, $28 came from the tips.

Little bit about Myself

I don't use Fiverr to earn a living for myself. Mainly I spend their time as a hobby, trying to assist other sellers and solving minor issues of clients. Had I been serious, I would have earned at least 10 times more by now.

Lessons Learned

• Bid wisely.
• Be proactive and don't just wait for the clients to come and place order on your gig.
• Your gig should be highly descriptive. So the buyer does not have to ask too many questions.
• Be gentle to the clients but also don't hesitate to open up when they are wrong.
• Don't deliver the gig once you have satisfied the buyer. Show them the samples/screenshots of the work done through messages. Once they give you a green signal, hit the deliver button.
• Always follow the rules and don't share your contact information.
